Planking

From the olden days in Alvor, well any fishing village, the fishermen would need to repair and fix their boats for sea. Here the fishermen are using a two-man saw to cut this log into planks to repair their boat.

The tomato seller

Another from the olden days here is a very popular figure from Alvor. He and his wife used to sell fruit and vegetables from the building next to the children's playground in the market square. Unfortunately, he has passed and the building is now bricked up.

Marisco fishing

All around the coast, you'll see men and women in the shallows. They are feeling around for shellfish, which they then make into a dish called Marisco. It's back-breaking work and in the summertime, their skin will be almost black. But the dish is loved everywhere you go.

Horse and Cart

Still used regularly around the small villages and even in the cities across Portugal. It's a lovely sight to see, but not much fun, if you're stuck, behind one on a narrow street. You will often see horses just tied to trees or rocks in the middle of fields or sometimes streets. These are Gypsy horses, you're best to leave them alone.

This is a sketch for future painting maybe.

Marley

Sometimes my painting buddy, Marley, is our crazy dog. Someone asked me if I got him to sit and stay for this, well of course not, he's crazy and can't sit still for five seconds, let alone half an hour. In this one, he also looks like Dobby from Harry Potter, I don't know why!

Village
meeting

One day, a group of village men, got together for a meeting and chat at the harbour building at Alvor. We took a number of photos and I sketched this one with the possibility of a future painting out of it. The weathered face and gestures could make a very interesting work in paint.
